Howie Morales
Lt. Governor
Howie Morales, a Democrat from Silver City, was elected Lieutenant Governor of New Mexico in November 2018, along with Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. Prior to becoming the state’s 30th Lieutenant Governor, he served in the New Mexico Senate for 11 years on the influential State Legislative Finance Committee.

Howie attended Silver High School in Grant County. He put himself through Western New Mexico University, where he earned degrees in Education, and later earned a PhD in Education from New Mexico State University – going on to be a classroom teacher and successful coach for a decade.

Throughout his public career, Howie has been an outspoken leader for New Mexico’s students, educators, and classrooms.

He pushed successfully for better pay, benefits, and more respect for educators and staff throughout the entire educational system.

Howie was instrumental in the creation of the Early Childhood Education and Care Department, and has been a champion for more Afterschool and Summer Learning programs across New Mexico, resulting in historic appropriations for community-based, non-profit, and other out-of-school-time opportunities.

He has been a key partner with the Governor to successfully create and fund free, universal child care for every New Mexico family that wants it, and historic, tuition-free college education – New Mexico’s bold, first-in-the-nation initiative.
